Travel Agent for Yamunotri

Yamunotri is located in the Himalayan ranges of the Tehri Garhwal region in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is the source of the River Yamuna, which descends from the Champasar Glacier near the peaks of Bandar Poonch and Shrikantha and where there is a temple dedicated to the river Goddess. The route normally followed by pilgrims is from Rishikesh or Dehradun to Hanuman Chatti by bus, from where they walk.

Some of the important tourist sites in Yamunotri are:

Divya Shila is a rock pillar outside the Yamunotri temple. It is believed that anyone wishing to enter the Yamunotri temple should first worship the Divya Shila.

The Yamunotri temple is dedicated to the Goddess Yamuna, the daughter of the Sun God, Surya. There is also an image of her twin brother Yama-the God of Death. Although the real source of the river is almost 1 km beyond the temple, the pilgrims go only till the temple. The access to the Champasar glacier from which Yamuna originates is extremely difficult for general tourists who are without trekking gear.

The temple at Yamunotri is closed during winters and priests shift their base to a village named Kharsali. The temple opens again on the auspicious day of Akshaye-Tritiya (April/May) and closes on the holy day of Diwali. On both these occasions, a ceremony is held, which is attended by priests and pilgrims.

There are number of hot springs around the Yamunotri Temple. The most important among them is the Surya Kund. The temperature here is almost 88°C. Probably, the spring is named after Yamuna’s father Surya. Pilgrims bathe in the hot spring and cook rice and potatoes by tying them in a cloth and immersing them in the hot water. These are also taken back as prasad (offering to the goddess).

There is a bazaar of shacks at Yamunotri where pilgrims buy offerings for the river goddess.

There are several interesting excursion options available from Yamunotri like Hanuman Chatti, Janaki Chatti and Barkot

The trek to Yamunotri starts from Hanuman Chatti. It is also the confluence of the rivers Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna.

Janaki Chatti is almost 6 km away from Yamunotri. The main attractions of this place are the numerous hot springs that are are believed to have medicinal properties. There is also a Tourist Rest House, maintained by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department.

Barkot is almost 49 km from Yamunotri and attracts tourists to an ancient temple situated there.
