where Shri Ramakrishna Paramhansa, the spiritual guru of Swami Vivekananda,
worshipped Goddess Kali. The recently built Vidyasagar Setu,
a bridge that connects both the banks of the Hooghly River is another
architectural marvel. Thakur Bari, the residence of Gurudev
Rabindranath Tagore, receives hundreds of visitors every year.
The Metro Railway, National Library, Shaheed Minar, Eden Garden,
Fort William, Rat Park and Marble Palace are some other
sites of the city that are worth visiting.
Rabindranath Tagore's university township, Shantiniketan,
is another sure stop on any tourist's itinerary. Two and a half
hours away from Calcutta by rail, this town in the Birbhum district
is rich in culture and art. Tourists can also visit the museum and
various homes of Tagore at his residence in the Uttarayan complex.
Bakreswar is another location close by which is famous for
its hot springs that are known to cure many chronic diseases. Several
ancient Kali and Shiva temples are also situated here.
The unsullied and pristine hill station of Darjeeling, located
7,000 feet above sea level is famous for its flavored tea all over
the world. Darjeeling Tea is often compared to champagne, and sprawling
tea gardens that dot the hilly slopes are evidence of this mammoth
industry. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute here is a paradise
for trekkers and provides ample opportunities for expeditions.
The small town of Mirik, known for its oranges, and the charming
town of Kalimpong, famous for its orchids, curio shops and
milk chocolates are quaint experiences. Kurseong is also
a well-liked tourist stopover from where one can enjoy a panoramic
view of the Gangetic delta from Eagle's Crag. The Jaldapara Wildlife
Sanctuary is known for elephants and other wild animals.
Malda with relics of Muslim culture embodied in the Bara
Sona mosque, and Behrampur are cradles of Bengal's Muslim
past. The Hazarduari Palace and the Khush Bagh revive memories of
days gone by.
Besides these, West Bengal has many more tourist destinations to
offer. Digha, Siliguri, Gaur, Pandua, Murshidabad, Bishnupur,
Haldia and the Sunderban Tiger Reserve are some of the
