One of the sites providing evidence of ancient civilisation in the region is Jajmau known as Siddhapuri in ancient times, located on the eastern end of Kanpur. Excavations that began in 1957-58 have yielded numerous objects that belong to the period between 600 BC to AD 1600.
Shri Radhakrishna temple is a mixture of the north and south Indian styles of temple architecture. Since the temple has been built by the JK Trust and is also known as the JK Temple.
Located near the temple is the Moti Jheel, which is quite popular as a picnic spot. It is actually a drinking water reservoir of the Kanpur Waterworks but the area around it has been developed into beautifully lanscaped gardens.
Rated one of the best zoological parks in the country, the Kanpur Zoo or the Allen Forest Zoo has been home to several species of fauna since its inauguration in 1971. Wild animals and the avian species can be easily spotted here.
Phool Bagh is a scenic garden sprawling in middle of the city of Kanpur. The park is also called the Ganesh Udyan after the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial located in its centre. In the post-World War I period, an Orthopaedic Rehabilitation Hospital was run from this building.
Another park, called the Nana Rao Park, is to the west of Phool Bagh. It is one of the sites associated with the Revolt of 1857. The Bibighar Well, which stands in this park, is evidence of the extreme reaction of the locals to colonial brutalities. The park was given its present name after independence.
Kanpur Memorial church or the All Soul’s Cathedral was built in 1875 in memory of the British soldiers and civilians killed in the Sati Chaura incident of 1857. Originally known as the Sati Chaura Ghat, this site was named the Massacre Ghat after the revolt of 1857. After independence, this ghat, on the right bank of the Ganges, was renamed Nana Rao Ghat.
The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) and the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute are important educational institutions in Kanpur.
The Kamla Retreat, the Dwarka Dhish Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and the Jain Glass Temple, a Jain temple exquisitely decorated with glass and enamel are other placed worth visiting besides the Tapeshwaridevi Temple, Vankhahdeshwar Temple, Anandeshwar Temple, Prayag Narain Temple (Shivalaya), and Paniki Hanuman Temple.
