Some of the important tourist sites in Bhubaneshwar are:
The 10th-11th century Lingaraja temple of Bhubaneswar has often been described as “the truest fusion of dream and reality”. Every inch of the surface of the 55-m-high Lingaraja temple is covered with elaborate carvings of Gods, Goddesses, dryads, nymphs and fairies. The temple can be seen from miles away and the sculpture and architecture here fuse elegantly to create a perfect harmony.
Built in ad 650, the Parashurameshwara Temple is one of the best examples of the Orissa style of temple architecture. This temple followed very rigid parameters set by the ritualistic doctrines.
Vaital Deul (ad 800), very near the Bindusagar Lake, has a double storied wagon roof containing obvious influences of Buddhist cave architecture. The interior of the temple has the image of Devi Chamunda (an incarnation of Goddess Kali).
Mukteshwar Temple (7th-8th century ad) is one of the most ornate temples in the Bhubaneswar. The intricate carvings of the deities point to the influence of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain styles of architecture.
The Rajarani Temple (ad 1100), which derives its name from the stone known as the Rajarani, was built earlier in comparison to the impressive Lingaraja. The temple set amongst picturesque paddy fields celebrates the feminine form like non-else.
Brahmeswara Temple (ad 1050) is situated around a kilometre east of the main road of the city. The temple stands in a courtyard flanked by four smaller temples. The sanctuary itself houses a Shivling. There are other minor shrines in every corner of the compound of the temple.
The Orissa State Museum is one of the best places to explore sculptures, stone inscriptions, lithic and bronze-age tools, rare copper plates, palm-leaf manuscripts, paintings, anthropological specimens, and musical instruments.
The Handicrafts Museum at Secretariat Road has a good collection of folk paintings, horn toys, brass castings, and sculptures.
The Tribal Museum deals with the various aspects of the tribal life and culture in Orissa. There is a very good collection of tribal dresses, weapons and jewellery. There is an outdoor display of the tribal houses including that of the Santhals, Juangs, Gadabas, Saoras and Kondhs. The museum is located at CRP Square in the city.
Bindusagar or the ocean drop lake, a placid lake with its edges bound by steps, nestles at the back of Lingaraja temple. Bindusagar is to be enjoyed quietly, reflections becoming inspirations and inspirations causing joy. Once a year, the Lingaraja deity is brought to the lake for a ritual bath.
