Ayodhya is a place of extreme sanctity for the Hindus, as it the birthplace of Lord Ram. In the Skand Purana, it has been referred to as one of the seven holiest cities of India. The Atharvaveda describes Ayodhya as a city built by the Gods and as prosperous as paradise itself. In Ramayana, it is referred to as the city built by Manu-the lawgiver of the Hindus.
