There are a number of tourist
destinations to be visited in Assam. Most of the travel agencies in Assam
offer travel services like air tickets, car rental, hotel room reservation
and packaged tours.
Some of the important places of tourist
interest in Assam are:
Guwahati, the capital of the state, is home to the Kamakhya
temple dedicated to the Mother Goddess. The temple is second in importance
only to the mighty Brahmaputra River and it is customary for anyone visiting
the state for the first time to pay his obeisance here.
The Janardan temple is the next most prominent temple that is located
in the center of the city, on top of Sukleshwar Hill. The fast flowing
Brahmaputra forms a magnificent backdrop to it. The unique temple of
Navagraha dedicated to the nine planets lies to the west of Chitrachal
Hill.
The Assam State Zoo and the Assam State Museum are worth
a visit. The undulating topography and three-side open enclosures make
the zoo almost like a natural habitat for animals. The museum, on the
other hand is the largest one in the city and has sections on epigraphy,
ethnography, sculpture, natural history, crafts, and arms.
Temple and palace ruins of the Ahom Ddynasty can be found at Sibsagar,
369 km from Guwahati. They have been resurrected by the Archeological
Survey of India and provide an interesting insight into the past glory
and splendor of Assam.
The Kaziranga National Park is one of the most picturesque wildlife
parks in India. The natural habitat of the one-horned rhino, Kaziranga
was founded as a game reserve in 1908 but declared a sanctuary in 1940
to counter excessive poaching. The park’s original inhabitants-the rhino
and the elephant being the most noticeable-now thrive in a secure and
serene environment. A trip to Kaziranga is a complete ‘jungle’ adventure.
The Manas National Park, situated amid the gentle slopes of the
Himalayas, is the only tiger reserve of its kind in the entire region.
It stretches beyond Indian territory into the Royal Manas National Park
in Bhutan, and apart from the growing population of tigers, Manas is also
home to the rare golden langur, the hispid hare, the pigmy hog, the one-horned
rhinoceros, and at least twenty other species of animals and birds that
are listed as highly endangered.
Pabitora is a small wildlife sanctuary where rhino and various
species of deer abound.
The town of Hajo is sacred to Hindus, Muslims as well as Buddhists.
It boasts of the Hayagriva Madhav Temple that is accessible reached by
a long stone stairway. At the foot of the stairway is a large pond inhabited
by one of Hajo’s oldest residents: a giant turtle. Hajo is also renowned
for its bell-metal work.
