The administrative capital of Port Blair is the only noticeable
town on the islands. The lively Aberdeen Bazaar lies at the heart
of the town and is constructed entirely of wood. Despite being razed to
the ground several times in the past, it has bounced back within no time
and is as full of odds and ends as before.
The Cellular Jail is a major attraction for tourists. Now overrun
with plants and moss, it is a memorial to the freedom fighters who martyred
their lives for the country’s independence. The library here has interesting
books on the indigenous tribes of the island.
The Marine Museum is an interesting place that covers the history
and geography of the islands. The Fisheries Museum on the other
hand displays the rich marine life of the Andaman Sea. The Anthropological
Museum exhibits some tools, dresses and photos.
The government has organized excursions to various natural and historical
sites from Port Blair. One can either take a boat to Ross Island,
the early administrative center of the British, or hike up Mount Harriet.
Scuba diving is another option that is available in Wandoor, 30
km southwest of Port Blair. Neil and Havelock are the most
easily accessible islands from the capital. Small boats leave for Havelock
from the Phoenix Bay Harbor four times a week, and usually dock at Neil
en route. These trips can be full of delightful surprises such as being
escorted by a school of dolphins, or spotting giant sea tortoise and flying
fish. It is worth spending a few days on the beautiful island of Neil
where basic accommodation is provided in a small settlement near the jetty.
A stay on Havelock, on the other hand would be much more luxurious since
it is one of the islands chosen by the government to turn into a luxurious
tourist destination. The coral reef at Havelock is still intact
and makes snorkeling a great pleasure. However, only the northern part
of the isle is populated, and if one is seeking solitude, he will find
plenty of it in the rest of the island.
